McGees

Meet David McGee, owner of McGees DIY and Hardware on Prudhoe's Front Street.

My Dad, Arthur McGee started the business in 1994 and I took over the running of the business in 2006.

We are a one-stop shop for DIY, gardening, homeware and gifts. I love running my own business and being my own boss as you can really see the fruits of your labour.

How have things changed over the last 12 months?

We have actually seen an upturn in business. As everyone was stuck at home their minds turned to all of those jobs they have been putting off around the house, and DIY became incredibly popular again.

To meet the demand we started a delivery service and we became a bit of a lifeline for people who were getting bored at home and needed jobs to keep them busy.

Before Coronavirus trading conditions were quite difficult as we battled against things like price increases, repercussions of Brexit and competition from larger retailers. During the last 12 months there has been a definite shift and I think people can see the benefits of shopping locally and supporting a local family.

As a local business we must continue to provide that personal service, ensure we are meeting the demands of our customers, such as increasing our online shop or continuing our promotion on social media.

It’s all about going the extra mile for your customers and local shops really are the best at that!
